The chances of having a normal delivery vary depending on a number of factors, including your age, health, and the position of your baby. However, most women (about 70%) have a normal delivery without any complications.
There are a number of potential complications that can occur during labor and delivery, such as:
- Premature birth.
- Cesarean section.
- Episiotomy.
- Breech birth.
- Placenta previa.
- Placenta abruption.
However, most complications are rare and can be successfully managed with prompt medical attention.
After your baby is born, they will be taken to a warmer to be dried and examined. They will also receive their first dose of vitamin K and eye drops to prevent infections.
Some other standard procedures for newborns right after birth include:
- Suctioning of the nose and mouth.
- Weighing and measuring the baby.
- Administering cord care.
- Breastfeeding or bottle feeding the baby.
If there are complications with your baby, they will be taken to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for specialized care. The NICU is a hospital unit that cares for premature or sick newborns.
The day of delivery will be a busy and exciting time. You will likely be admitted to the hospital in the morning and will be monitored by your doctor.
Some of the things that you can expect on the day of delivery include:
- Having your vital signs checked regularly.
- Having your cervix checked to see how dilated it is.
- Having your contractions monitored.

- Delivering your baby.
Breastfeeding is the best way to feed your baby. It provides them with all the nutrients they need and helps to protect them from infection.
If you are planning to breastfeed, talk to your doctor or midwife about how to get started. They can help you to find a lactation consultant who can provide you with support and advice.
After you give birth, you will need to take some time to recover. Your doctor will give you instructions on how to care for yourself during this time.
Some of the things that you will need to do include:
- Getting plenty of rest.
- Drinking plenty of fluids.
- Eating a healthy diet.
- Taking pain medication, if needed.
- Caring for your incision, if you had a cesarean section.
- Breastfeeding your baby, if desired.
It is important to follow your doctor's instructions carefully so that you can recover from childbirth as quickly and easily as possible.
