Obstetrician-Gynecologists: Trusted Women’s Health Experts

Share

Obstetrician-gynecologists, also called OB-GYNs, are physicians who specialize in women’s health. From your first gynecologic visit to delivery and beyond, your OB-GYN is a trusted partner in your health. Here’s what you need to know about this important women’s health specialist.

What Do Obstetrician-Gynecologists Do?

OB-GYNs offer a range of services related to women’s sexual and reproductive health. They can provide contraception counseling, perform Pap smears and other screenings for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and offer preconception counseling. obstetrician-gynecologists also provide care during pregnancy and delivery, manage menopause symptoms, and treat problems with the female reproductive system. In some cases, they may also provide primary care.

What Training Do They Have?

After completing medical school, obstetrician-gynecologists must complete four years of residency training in obstetrics and gynecology. During their residencies, they receive comprehensive training in all aspects of women’s health, including but not limited to pregnancy and childbirth, breast health, gynecologic cancers, and family planning. Many OB-GYNs also choose to complete fellowships or subspecialty training in areas such as high-risk pregnancy or infertility.

Why See an Obstetrician-Gynecologist?

There are many reasons why you might see an obstetrician-gynecologist. You may be considering birth control options, you may be experiencing menopausal symptoms, or you may be pregnant. No matter what your reason for seeking care from an OB-GYN, you can rest assured that you will receive comprehensive, compassionate care from a trusted expert in women’s health.

If you are a woman of reproductive age—that is, if you have reached puberty and have not yet reached menopause—you should see an obstetrician-gynecologist for preventive care at least once a year. However, you may need to see an OB-GYN more frequently if you are pregnant or if you have any concerns about your sexual or reproductive health.
